A Review: Army Men - Air Combat, N64 2000

Army Men: Air Combat (or Army Men: Air Attack for the PlayStation One) is a third-person shooter that puts the player in the role of a Green Air Force Captain, William Blade. As he and his ragtag bunch of 'chopper' pilots go up against the forces of the evil Tan Army. Play is focused on flying a 'chopper' that is reminiscent of the United States Army Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” through a series of missions to halt the evil Tan army from taking Green territory and trying to take over the world. Air Combat is one of a series of games that were inspired by the Army Men from the popular Toy Story films and uses a 3D game engine that renders terrain and environments in real time. I didn't find that I enjoyed this game as much as I did the other Army Men games. It just seemed to fall flat; I'd just gotten into it and was feeling my groove when I finished the last mission. I just don't feel that this game was really long enough to enjoy it fully, and I found it disap...

A Review: Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M, N64 1999

Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. is a first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64, developed by Acclaim Studio London and published by Acclaim Entertainment. The game plays like most other first-person shooters, with the player taking on the role of either Tony Lewis or Myra Lane and then leading them through a series of missions to halt an insectoid-like alien race from invading Earth. The story for this game came from a comic book series by Valiant Comics, which Acclaim Studios had purchased not long before work on Armorines began. Despite how this game did with critics and reviewers of the time, I didn't think that it was all that bad, to be honest; in fact, I quite liked it. It did well, in my opinion, as a simple run-n'-gun action game and seemed to scratch an itch for me that I didn't know I actually had. The plot was a little too loose at times, but I thought that it worked well enough to tie this game's various missions and segments together. There were some level bug...

A Review: Arkham - The Dark Legacy, PC 2017 (18+)

**THIS POST IS ABOUT AN ADULT GAME, BE WARNED** Arkham is a dating sim mixed with RPG and management elements that puts the player in the role of a young man, Charles Ward. As he finds himself in the midst of a Lovecraftian tale, with his sanity spiralling down in his obsessive quest to unveil his own mysterious legacy, will he succumb to the temptation of the dark forces set against him? Play is centred around building relationships with the various girls that you can meet and managing Charles' needs and stats. The game works on a 24-hour time system, with various actions, interactions, and abilities locked out until the correct time of day. This game has a total of six endings, each with their own outcomes and epilogues that are different depending on how the player has gone through the game. At first, I liked this game and enjoyed spending time leveling my stats and working on my relationships with the various girls. However, at the midpoint of this game, I felt that it just l...

A Review: Archimedean Dynasty, DOS 1996

Archimedean Dynasty is the first game in the AquaNox series, and one that would go on to be re-released through the online game download service GOG. The player takes on the role of Emerald Flint, a mercenary submarine pilot, as he goes on a series of different missions for some of the last remaining factions of a post-apocalyptic world. All while uncovering a plot by bionic machines to destroy the last remains of humanity and take the increasingly scarce natural resources for themselves. Gameplay is much like titles such as Wing Commander, with the player needing to navigate a 3D environment and pilot through a mix of narrow spaces and obstacles as well as engage in underwater dogfights. I felt that this game was one of the many titles out there that was unfairly undersold. It had the potential to be something really great, but it just wasn't given a fair enough chance. I loved the way that this game played and found the 3D environments to be excellent for the time of release. The...

A Review: Anime Artist III - Harem, PC 2020 (18+)

** CONTENT WARNING** This game is NSFW, so please be warned! This is the third game in the Anime Artist series and one of the last ones that I chose to play. The way that this game plays is exactly the same as the other two games—literally a copy and paste with nothing new or fresh. The girls were a little more interactive than the other games, but otherwise, the core gameplay is a carbon copy. The player goes through this game by choosing an 'assistant' and then completing various pictures, with these assistants providing encouragement and advice. Play is all done through the mouse, which allows the player to 'enjoy the game one handed'. I was done with this series by this point, to be honest, and found that the repeated formula of the other games used here was just tired and overdone. I had hoped that there was something new and fresh going on with this one, as the Steam page synopsis claimed that there were new and exciting features to be found, but I found that to...

A Review: Anime Artist II - Lovely Danya, PC 2020 (18+)

** CONTENT WARNING** This game is NSFW, so please be warned!     Not long after completing the first game, I downloaded this, the second title in the series. The play is exactly the same as the first game, with the exception of the character Danya. She serves as a sort of player guide and interactive companion, taking on the role of a student that you are teaching to draw. Again, play is all done from the viewpoint of an artist and with the mouse for 'one-handed gameplay' as another reviewer put it. Anime Artist II is also part of a bundle of games now that includes the first title, several other games from Neoclassic Games, and a few other developers that produce similar types of games.   I liked this game for nearly the exact same reasons that I liked the first one. Play is simple and fun to get into, with an easily navigated menu and interface. The new girls are all beautiful, and some of the posing and such that they are put into is really well done. I liked the inclu...

A Review: Anime Artist, PC 2019 (18+)

** CONTENT WARNING** This game is NSFW, so please be warned!     Anime Artist is a simple point-and-click, paint-by-numbers kind of game. Where the player takes on the role of an artist, drawing a mixture of girls in a variety of poses and situations. Play is very simple, and all of the controls are through the mouse, which allows for 'one-handed play,' as one reviewer put it. The reception for this game was pretty good, with it being marked as 'very positive' from one hundred and forty different reviews. People seemed to like the relaxing atmosphere and simple play style of this game a fair bit. There were some that found this game to be repetitive, however, and some thought that the content could have been a little more diverse. I personally enjoyed this game and liked the idea and concepts behind it, finding that there aren't many games nowadays that offer what this game does. The ease and simplicity of play are great for when you just want to sit and relax witho...

A Review: Alundra, PSOne 1998

Alundra is an RPG, or role-playing game, developed by Matrix Software and published by Psygnosis in the late 1990's for the PlayStation One. In this game has the player assume the role of Alundra, a young and inexperienced 'Dreamwalker', as he uncovers a sinister plot to destroy the world and battles the creatures and demons set upon said task. The game focuses heavily on exploration and puzzle solving, with the player completing a series of trials as they advance through the game. Considering the target audience, Alundra was criticised at the time for having some very dark themes and subject matter, such as depression, survivor guilt, and the darker side of religious zealotry. Alundra was also considered by some to be the spiritual successor to the Sega Genesis game Landstalker, particularly because some of the developers for this game had also worked on Landstalker. Alundra was originally going to be very much like Final Fantasy, with a party-based RPG system. However, it...

A Review: Alpha Prime, PC 2007

Alpha Prime is a first-person shooter game from the Czech developer Black Element Software, the same company behind popular titles such as Day-Z and Arma. The game puts the player in the role of Arnold Weiss, a wizened and pessimistic mining prospector, as he goes on a mission to save his former friend at the behest of his former lover, Livia. Gameplay is mostly standard for the FPS genre and is one of those titles that is very much a case of 'what you see is what you get'. This game's script and story were written by a famous Czech author, Ondrej Neff, and run through the Enforce 2 engine. One of Black Element's proprietary game engines. Alpha Prime was initially released on Steam, and as of August 2011, it also became available on the cloud gaming service OnLive. Despite the reviews and critics opinions, I liked this game for the most part and enjoyed the time I spent on it. The gameplay is steady and well-paced, with plenty of interesting and engaging firefights and ...
