A Review: 40 Winks, PSOne 1999

The third and final post for today, is a review for the old PlayStation One game 40 Winks. I remember back to when I used to collect the official N64 magazine from my local newsagents. I even remember the official reviews and guides that came out for this game and thinking that it might have been worth saving up for at the time. Unfortunately, 40 Winks never made it to being released on the '64, but it did get released onto the PSOne, something that I didn't know at the time. So late in 2020, I found a copy of this game on a ROM site, and remembering the good words that the reviewers had for it, I downloaded it and gave it a play. As I said, this game was scheduled for release on the '64 platform, with reviews and even several guides written for it. Yet for some reason that still escapes me to this day, the game was cancelled and the prototype scrapped along with the game's original files. There are some data preservation sites that claim to have a working prototype, bu...

A Review: A Bug's Life, N64 1998

The second review that I'll be adding is for the old N64 game A Bug's Life An action-adventure game that follows the film's plot for the most part and seemed to do fairly well for itself. A game that I had no idea existed actually existed until I downloaded a ROM pack from a game preservation website in late 2020. It sat awaiting my attention until I decided on a playthrough in the later half of 2022. From what I have learned while researching this game, it seems to have been marketed more toward children and younger gamers. The plot is pretty much a direct copy of the film, with some added stages and changes made for the sake of gameplay. Completing levels even unlocked various clips from the film that served as a way to setup further play or to close out the end of a level. In 2010, this game was re-released on the Playstation Store for the PS3 and Playstation Portable, which met with fair success. There are some rumours around various game websites that suggest that th...

A Review: Abandoned Places: A Time For Heroes, DOS 1993

Today I'll be adding several reviews that I have sitting in a folder. As always, I hope that you enjoy my content and possibly find it interesting enough to read. Thank You. The first is a review for the old game Abandoned Places: A Time For Heroes for the old DOS systems. A Dungeon Master clone from a small Hungarian development house and a title that I downloaded as part of a .zip pack featuring a collection of RPG's. It is one of the more obscure games that I have played, but it comes from a time when these types of games were very popular. As a Dungeon Master clone, this game plays in much the same manner. The player chooses four warriors from a broad selection to revive and then leads them on a quest to stop a powerful magician from destroying the world by crawling through various dungeons and locations to unearth and reunite long-hidden treasures. This game had a troubled development and was, at one point, close to never being released. The main problem was that the game...

A Review: 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker, PSTwo 2000

The third and final review I'll be posting today is for the PlayStation Two game 18 Wheeler - American Pro Trucker. 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker is an arcade-style truck racing game developed and published by Acclaim. This is a game that I played a couple of times in an actual ride-along arcade unit when I was a kid. I had no idea that a port to home consoles had even been considered, let alone actually done. This is due to the inherent limitations of arcade games and the fact that they are short by design. No matter, I found a copy online, downloaded it, and made a playthrough, and boy, was this a short game. 18 Wheeler is a game that was originally developed by Sega for their AM2 arcade cabinets and was later ported to the Playstation 2 and GameCube by Acclaim Entertainment. SEGA followed up the arcade success of this game with a sequel, The King of Route 66, which was released in 2002 on arcade units before being ported to the Playstation Two and SEGA Dreamcast. This was t...

A Review: 8-Bit Armies, PC 2016

The second review for today is about the PC game 8-Bit Armies, enjoy 8-Bit Armies is an RTS game developed and published by Petroglyph Games for the Steam Online Game Store in 2016. I found this game in late 2018 and kept it on my wishlist for quite some time before I eventually forgot about it. In early 2021, the game came back onto my radar and seemed to be completed and all wrapped up. So I got myself a copy and gave it a play, hoping that it would be as good as some reviewers led me to believe. 8-Bit Armies is stylized much like the old Command and Conquer games and was developed by a team comprised of some of the original C&C developers. Play is fairly standard for an RTS title, with the same mechanics and features that many would expect. Such as taking a small army, building up a base, collecting resources, and then destroying the enemy AI over a series of missions in a campaign setting. Reviews on Steam have this game marked as 'fairly positive' at the time of writi...

A Review: 007: Tomorrow Never Dies, PSOne 1999

Today I shall be posting three reviews, the first is for the game 007: Tomorrow Never Dies, a PlayStation One game from 1999, enjoy. 007: Tomorrow Never Dies is a 3rd-person shooter game with stealth elements developed for the PSOne by Black Ops Entertainment and published by EA Games/MGM Interactive. I found this game in my local Gamestation's bargain bin (before the company went into bankruptcy in 2012) when I was a youngster for £5. I thought nothing of buying it and giving it a go based purely on brand recognition and the box art. I can remember playing through it at least three times and finding the game to be average at best. When I found the files for download on a ROM site, I decided to look at this game with adult eyes and see if I could still enjoy it. This is the first Bond game to come from Electronic Arts after the company acquired the licensing rights from the previous developer/publisher and followed on from the successful Goldeneye game of 1997. Originally, this gam...
